Gzip Compressor

Compress text with gzip and see the size saved, or paste a compressed blob back to decompress it.

How to use

Type or paste text, then click Compress. The result is base64 text you can copy or paste elsewhere - paste a previously-compressed blob back in and click Decompress to reverse it.

FAQ

Why is the output base64 instead of raw bytes?

So it fits safely in a plain text box and can be copied/pasted - the before/after sizes shown are still the true byte counts, not the base64-inflated ones.

Why is this computed on the server instead of the browser?

For consistent behavior across browsers, including older Safari, rather than relying on the browser's own CompressionStream API.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No, it's compressed or decompressed for this one request and not retained.
